Empire Magnetics Inc.: Stand Alone Resolvers (EMR57 Series)
Many industrial operations involve the use, production or processing of materials in powder form. Motors used in the automation of such processes are prone to failures when particulates migrate into unprotected bearings and motor cavities.
Empire Magnetics dustproof motors survive in environments where other motors fail.
Features include built-in O ring seals that eliminate dust leaks at potential penetration points, motor insulation that allows operating at 145 degrees C, case temperature (185 degrees C winding temperature) and air fittings for pressurization are supplied; pressure rated to 15 psi to lock out contamination.
Empire Magnetics dustproof motors are available in industry standard size 23, 34, 42, and 65 frame sizes. Note where seal housing affect usable shaft length.
For the most unique and demanding applications, dustproof and abrasive dustproof step motors can be combined with the following environmental options: radiation hardened, waterproof and extended temperature.
Housing seals
Built-in O rings
Motor insulation
Air fittings
Waterproof Motors & Resolvers
The use of electrical motors in and around water presents a complex set of challenges to the equipment user, systems designer and to the equipment supplier. Standard or commercial motors are typically designed for low cost, high volume manufacturing as a result they are typically not suitable for use in wet areas.
Empire Magnetics has designed a series of products specifically intended to meet the requirements of certain applications. Stainless steel housed waterproof stepper motors and A.C. induction motors provide corrosion resistance, and easy to clean features. The stainless steel packages are useful in nuclear reactor applications, while the Waterproof A.C. motors are frequently found in the food processing industry.
For submersion and deep sea applications the addition of pressure compensation devices allow the equipment to be used in applications that are particularly inhospitable.
The stainless waterproof packages provide flexibility to add gearboxes, feedback resolvers and other features to the mechanical assemblies, the ability to accommodate designers needs makes them the first choice for new product developments.
Custom products available:
Empire Magnetics Inc. can provide the following items on a custom basis, stainless steel brushless DC motors with resolver feedback, assemblies of motors and gearboxes, assemblies of motors and resolvers, assemblies of brushless motors and propellers as thruster motors, assemblies in hermetically sealed vessels.

Cryogenic Stepper Motors & Resolvers
Cryogenic temperatures (to 20 degrees Kelvin) call for motors designed with materials carefully selected for compatible thermal expansion characteristics and resistance to brittleness. CY Series cryogenic stepper motors feature special cryogenic dry lubrication and proprietary metal and or metal alloy components. We can also manufacture custom motors wound with superconducting wire or perform other user specified alterations as required at additional cost.
Radiation Hardened Motors & Resolvers
High energy gamma radiation will attack all of the materials in a device, however the non-metallic materials in a motor or resolver are subject to more rapid breakdown. Lubricants, varnish, adhesives, insulations, and cables deteriorate and ultimately crumble. Empire Magnetics radiation hardened stepper motors, motors and resolvers (RH-) combine the best available radiation resistant materials with practical commercial practices to provide products with the longest possible service life within pragmatic budgetary considerations.
The standard RH series products are rated for 2 x 108 Rads, total accumulated dose of Gamma radiation. However on a custom basis, products can be provided with life in excess of 1 x 109 Rads, TAD. Several of these products were tested in a hot cell, all of the supplied products exceeded requirements. (For details see frequently asked questions (FAQ) at the bottom of this page)
Radiation hardened include stepper motors, resolvers, brushless motors, gearboxes, brakes. On a custom basis AC motors, assemblies of various types and complete systems can be provided.
Note: Waterproof and Radiation Hardened products have been developed for specific applications. This combination requires a compromise of radiation resistance or a significant design change.
Hazardous Area Motors & Resolvers
Automating an industrial process is a complex problem when combustible vapors or dust are present in the work environment.
Two commonly used methods are Explosion Proof (EP) and Purged and Pressurized (PT). Explosion Proof devices are intended to withstand and contain an expected explosion, Purged and Pressurized systems are intended to prevent an explosion from occurring. While Explosion Proof is more widely known the Purged and Pressurized technique is more flexible and universally recognized.
Note:
Empire Magnetics makes no claim as to the suitability of pressurized motors for any particular application. These products are not rated or warranted as Explosion Proof Motors, nor does Empire Magnetics assume any liability for their use in proximity to volatile materials. Responsibility for motor use lies solely with the user.
Each unit includes a ten foot cable. Cables up to 100 feet in length may be ordered. NPT cable penetration allows connection of conduit. Use of pressurized conduit is recommended. Motors are otherwise supplied with air fittings.

High Temperature Motors & Resolvers
High temperature motors, (HT- prefix) are provided with class H insulation systems. This insulation begins to melt at 180 degrees Centigrade. The heat generated by the motor must be subtracted away from the melting point of the insulation to obtain the maximum allowable ambient temperature. The ability of the motor to dissipate heat into the environment will also affect the maximum allowable ambient temperature. In typical stepper motor applications these motors will operate successfully up to +155 degrees C (refer to FAQ regarding heat losses). Provided the change in temperature does not exceed 10 degrees C. per minute, these motors can be used in a very wide range of temperatures. The HT series products without modifications are useful from 0 to about +155 (see heat loss details). For temperatures from 0 to -20 C most of the HT products can be used, but different lubrications are required. From -20 to -40 C some select products are suitable. Consult the factory before ordering. For temperatures lower than -40 C refer to Cryogenic products.
